You can start your walk uphill from Villa Bjørge. Follow the street to the mailboxes 250 meters away. Make a sharp right turn on the steep tractor path to the top. From here follow the street to the left, and enter the forest between the apartment building and the townhouses. If you are unsure, don’t hesitate to ask anybody, they will help you. There is a nice round trip to take here with very nice views. When you get to body of water called “Knappentjørna”, you can surely go for a summer swim.
🏰 Historical Highlights
At the top, you’ll find ruins of a German WWII fortification, a quiet reminder of Bergen’s wartime past. These remnants are scattered across the rocky plateau and add a layer of intrigue to the hike. The area is also dotted with small side trails that lead to cliff edges with views toward Lyderhorn, Løvstakken, and even Grimstadfjorden on clear days.
🌿 Nature & Atmosphere
Knappenfjellet is known for its peaceful vibe. The forest is dense with pine and birch, and the air is fresh with coastal breezes. In summer, locals often swim in Knappatjørna, and in autumn, the area glows with golden foliage. The trail can get muddy after rain, so sturdy shoes are a good idea.

Løvstakken
A hike up Løvstakken is one of Bergen’s most rewarding local adventures—steeped in history, surrounded by nature, and offering panoramic views that stretch from the city center to the sea. It is easily accessible from Bønestoppen, but also several other starting points. Just be careful where you park your car.
🏔️ Overview of Løvstakken
- Elevation: 477 meters
- Duration: 45–120 minutes depending on route and pace
- Difficulty: Moderate (steep in places, but manageable for most hikers)
- Terrain: Gravel paths, forest trails, rocky sections near the summit
Løvstakken is one of Bergen’s famous Seven Mountains and the highest peak west of the city center. It’s less crowded than Fløyen or Ulriken, making it a peaceful alternative for those seeking solitude and nature.
What You’ll See

Viggohytten
Viggohytten is one of Bergen’s charming “byfjellshytter”—small mountain cabins scattered throughout the city’s surrounding hills. Located at 305 meters above sea level, Viggohytten sits on the slopes of Eikelifjellet, just west of Fyllingsdalen, and is a beloved destination for hikers, families, and waffle enthusiasts alike.
🏡 What Is Viggohytten?
Viggohytten is a modest, red-painted cabin nestled in the woods, often open on weekends for visitors to enjoy fresh waffles, coffee, and a cozy atmosphere. It’s part of Bergen’s tradition of accessible nature retreats, where locals can hike up for a break, a snack, and a chat with fellow wanderers.
The cabin is maintained by volunteers and is a popular stop on DNT’s nærtur (nearby hike) program, which encourages easy, social walks in the Bergen area.
🥾 How to Get There
There are several scenic routes to reach Viggohytten:
- From Kanadaskogen: For a longer loop, start in the forested area of Kanadaskogen and make your way east toward Eikelifjellet.

🌲 Atmosphere and Surroundings
The area around Viggohytten is peaceful and forested, with views toward Grimstadfjorden and the surrounding hills. It’s especially beautiful in summer and autumn when the foliage turns golden, and in spring when wildflowers bloom along the trail.
The cabin itself is simple but welcoming, often buzzing with hikers enjoying a break. There’s outdoor seating, and the smell of waffles wafting through the trees is part of the charm.
