Local Hikes from Sansel Cabin in Voss
If you’ve packed your hiking boots—or skis in winter—you won’t need to go far. Just behind the cabin, you’ll find several trails, both short and long. Be prepared for a steep start!
🏔️ Lønahorgi – Panoramic Views from 1410 Meters
When you arrive at Voss and the cabin, you will notice Lønahorgi towering above Voss. It offers breathtaking views of glaciers, fjords, and valleys. You can start the hike from the cabin or take the Voss Gondola to the top for an easier route. The trail is well-marked and about 20 km round trip, depending on your starting point. The trip gives you a panoramic view of Voss, and on clear days you can see glaciers and the fjord in the distance. The starting point for the trip can be the cabin, or the top of the Voss Gondola, which provides the least demanding route. The path towards Lønahorgi is signposted from the top of the Voss Gondola and is well marked all the way. Depending on your starting the trip, it is about 16-20 km round trip. If you are ready for a really long summit trip, you can start this hike all the way from Voss Sentrum.
🌄 Hangurstoppen – A Shorter Hike with Big Rewards
Also accessible via the Voss Gondola, Hangurstoppen is a steep but rewarding hike. At the summit, enjoy panoramic views and relax at the restaurant. If you prefer not to hike, the gondola from the railway station takes you straight there.
At the top there is a nice restaurant here for food and drinks.
💦 Stalheimsfossen – Easy Walk to a Mighty Waterfall
This short, wheelchair-accessible trail leads to Stalheimsfossen, a 126-meter waterfall. The path starts at the bottom of Stalheimskleiva and ends at a safe viewpoint near the river.
This is a short and easy walk to the foot of the mighty Stalheimsfossen waterfall. The trail starts at an information board at the bottom of Stalheimskleiva. The trail is wide and easy to walk, well adapted for both wheelchairs and prams.
The proximity to the river makes it a great nature experience to walk here. In the end, you arrive at a viewpoint where you can enjoy the waterfall at a safe distance. The waterfall has a total drop of 126 meters.
🚉 Myrdal & Myrdalsfossen – Scenic Train and Waterfall Views
Would you like to experience one of the world’s most spectacular train journeys?
Located at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, Flåm is home to the world-famous Flåm Railway, part of the Norway in a Nutshell tour. From Flåm, you can:
- Visit the Stegastein Viewpoint (650 meters above the fjord)
- Visit Myrdal
- Ride the Flåm Zipline, the longest in the Nordics (1381 meters, 350 meters above ground!)
Stegastein Viewpoint
When arriving at Flåm, we suggest you start by visiting the fantastic Stegastein viewpoint, 650 meters above the Aurlandsfjord. The viewpoint is part of the National Scenic Route that runs from Aurland to Lærdal.
Nærøyfjord
You can also relax on one of the fjord cruises that will take you through the fjords, letting you experience the mountains from sea level. Feel the majestic mountains towering above you.
Flåm zipline
Get stunning views and plenty of air under your feet from The longest zipline in the Nordic countries, with its 1381 meters!
350 meters above the ground, fly along at 100 kilometers per hour through beautiful, pristine nature.
❄️ Odda – Gateway to Glaciers and Trolltunga
You can get to Odda by car or bus. Odda will give you some of the best experiences Norway can offer. From Odda you will find Folgefonna which is the third largest glacier on the Norwegian mainland and has been an attraction for tourists since 1833. Today it forms the core of Folgefonna National Park. Both inside and outside the park, there are several icefalls and glaciers, coarse-grained valleys, and cascading rivers with ice-green meltwater.
Trolltunga (Troll’s tongue)
Trolltunga, the most spectacular rock formation in Norway, protrudes from the rock 700 meters above Ringedalsvatnet. The small stone plateau is part of the western end of the Hardangervidda and was formed by the ice that covered large parts of Scandinavia through several ice ages. The trip up to Trolltunga is long and demanding, but you get paid for the effort – up there awaits a magnificent view. The estimated walking time is 8-12 hours. Hikers must be in good physical shape and have the proper equipment.
Buarbreen
The trip to Buarbreen goes through a varied landscape. You start at Buer Gard and follow the walking path through. In a slight climb, a section follows through cultural pastures, to the first vantage point which is Gletthaug. From there you continue through a small forest, you meet a lot of bridges and a floating suspension bridge.
From this bridge, you have a beautiful view of the glacier and through Buardalen. This area is wild and beautiful with a lot of water and foaming rivers.
Furebergsfossen
Furebergfossen is located along Rv 551 between Årsnes and Sunndal, at the mouth of the Maurangerfjord. The mighty waterfall, has a free fall of 20 m. The road almost passes through the waterfall so it can’t be missed.
Myrdal
From Flåm you can take the train to Myrdal on a historic train ride with “Flåmsbana”. This trip has been described as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Norway. The train runs from the end of Aurlandsfjorden, a fjord arm to Sognefjorden, up to the high mountains at Myrdal Station. The journey through Flåmsdalen shows the nature of Western Norway from its very best side.
Myrdalsfossen (Giant Waterfall)
Myrdalsfossen was an unofficial name of a huge waterfall near Myrdal, in the river Myrdøla at Myrdal.
The best way to visit the waterfall is to take the Flåmbanen to Myrdal and then decline to Flåm on foot. Almost all the way, if you descend by foot, you walk along a waterfall that plunges down into several steps.
